Unstained

Telling Stories That Empower Youth at Risk
Topic: Sexual and Reproductive Rights
Location: New Mexico
Unstained is an evidence-based entertainment-education (EE) mini-series aimed at promoting sexual health and reducing risk behaviors among youth involved or at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. This innovative program seeks to address the disproportionately high rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within this vulnerable population.
Addressing Health Inequities Among At-Risk Teens
Teens in the juvenile justice system face significant barriers to sexual health education and services. In New Mexico, where teen pregnancy rates are among the highest in the U.S., these challenges are compounded by past trauma, limited access to information, and inadequate communication about consent and contraception.
Connecting Youth to Knowledge and Resources
Launched in 2023, Unstained uses a compelling narrative to engage at-risk youth. The series follows Sofia and Micah, two teenage girls navigating the justice system, family conflict, and sexual health challenges. Through the mentorship of Angel, a nurse practitioner at a detention center, the girls gain knowledge and support to make healthier choices.
The mini-series is designed for flexible implementation in settings such as detention centers, probation offices, and reentry programs, either in group sessions or individually.
